I have been taking a little break from dive, dive, diving and have been studying “Surface Pattern Design”. Learning Adobe Illustrator and repeat patterns. Math! As part of my homework, I read “Share your work”-Austin Kleon and “Big Magic”- Elisabeth Gilbert. Both resonated with me so I will share.
In my Surface Design course, The month of May challenge is to design something inspired by someone in your life.
Perfect timing as it is Mother’s Day! Gilbert asks in her book, where does your creativity come from? For me, my Mom. She was a teacher, a florist, an entrepreneur with a home interior business back in the day. She sewed, she cooked, she hung her own wallpaper and she took us camping in the pop-up dad made. Growing up on a farm she just figured out how to do things. She made sure we had a horse and learned how to swim. She threw epic parties, is a great entertainer and still enjoys getting people together. My mom is a creative, a maker, an inspiration.
My watercolour design “Coral Reef” inspired by my mom.
For my non-scuba pals, a little Coral Reef 101: The coral polyps that build the reef survive by forming a symbiotic relationship with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae. The polyps offer the algae shelter while the zooxanthellae create energy—through photosynthesis—that the corals use as food. In a sense, the coral polyps are “farming” the algae. *
The center of the design represents the home and where the heart is. The core serves as the foundation and the outreaching “branches” both launch and protect her “children”. There is nothing more comforting than a mother’s arms. On top, a crown……just because. Happy Mom’s Day!
